Welcome to Google Workspace at UC San Diego - UCSD.EDU
Google Workspace is the default email, calendaring, and collaboration system used by faculty, staff, and graduate students across Jacobs School of Engineering and School of Physical Sciences, Qualcomm Institute, and various other entities across the UC San Diego campus. While similar to consumer Google services, Google Workspace for educational institutions has various additional features and enhancements, as well as being governed by significantly stricter rules regarding the privacy of your data.
Google Workspace - Education Plus Edition
Logging In For the First Time
UC San Diego automatically generates an official primary username of the form primaryusername@ucsd.edu. For those of us at UC San Diego that use Google Workspace for email, account usernames are of the form primaryusername@ucsd.edu.
Your ucsd.edu Google account uses campus Single Sign-On for authentication. To log in, connect to mail.google.com and you will be redirected to the SSO login screen.
NOTE: If you have a new campus Active Directory account and have not yet set your own new password, you will first need to visit password.ucsd.edu to set up your password.

If you are accustomed to using Outlook, or other Microsoft Office products, in your past work endeavors, it may feel daunting to use a completely new interface for your job-related functions. Please allow for an adjustment period, as you work to understand the new interface, and how to best accomplish your tasks in this new environment.

Data Privacy - Google Workspace for Education vs Consumer accounts
Google Workspace for Education may look similar to your personal consumer Gmail account but is very different, both from a privacy and management perspective.
Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service clearly states that we own all of the data housed within the domain, they are simply hosting it for us.
Does Google use data in my ucsd.edu account for advertising purposes? No
High Availability and System Security: Google stripes data between physical data centers (similar to RAID). That way, no one data center contains complete data. They also encrypt each datacenter and have an impressive team monitoring security - both physical and network.
UC San Diego's use of Google Workspace was approved at the President of the UC Regents office in addition to the UC San Diego Chancellor's office.
